Understanding Order Slicing

When you try to place an order for higher quantity you might have received a pop up as seen below.

What is Order Slicing?

Order Slicing is a feature that splits a big order into smaller parts when the order quantity is higher than the maximum allowed by the Exchange.
This ensures your order follows Exchange rules and gets executed smoothly.

Exchange Order Limits

  • Every derivative contract (like NIFTY or Bank Nifty) has a maximum quantity limit per order.
  • This limit is fixed by the Exchange and can change from time to time.
  • You can check the current limit from the exchange website

Example (Bank Nifty – Lot Size 35)

  • Exchange maximum per order = 900 quantities (25 lots)
  • If you place an order for 26 lots (910 quantities), it crosses the limit and would normally be rejected.
  • To place this order, you would need to split it as:
    • 1st order: 900 quantities (25 lots)
    • 2nd order: 10 quantities (1 lot)

How Order Slicing Helps

  • With Order Slicing, you don’t need to manually split orders.
  • You can place a big order of up to 25 times the Exchange limit in one go.
  • The system automatically breaks it into smaller valid orders and sends them to the Exchange.
  • Example:
If Bank Nifty max = 900 quantities, you can place up to 22,500 quantities (900 × 25) in a single entry.
The app will auto-slice it into 25 orders and send them for execution.

Key Points to Remember

  • If your order is more than 25× the Exchange limit, the order will not slice and be rejected. You’ll need to place it in parts.
  • Limits differ for each instrument and can change over time.
  • Also refer Navia’s order Value limits.

In short:

  • Exchange sets per-order limits for certain contracts
  • Large orders are auto-sliced to fit within these rules.
  • You can trade faster without worrying about splitting orders manually.
  • Applies to square off orders also.
